The Perfect D.C. Staycation, Mother’s Day Edition

Mother’s Day doesn’t need a packed schedule to be special. Sometimes it’s just about a change of pace, a good meal, and time that doesn’t feel rushed.

May in D.C. offers that experience without trying too hard. The weather is bright, the city is full of energy, and even familiar places start to feel anew.

If you’re staying in town, this is your excuse to turn it into a proper staycation for Mom. Take it slow, and make a day (or a few days) of it.

The Perfect D.C. Staycation, Mother’s Day Edition

Call us biased, but we think a perfect staycation starts in NoMa at The Morrow, where everything is easy from the moment you arrive. To kick it off, start by booking the Breakfast Included Package.

It takes one decision off your plate and replaces it with something you’ll both look forward to: breakfast by celebrity chef Marcus Samuelsson.

Morning: Gentle Starts & Coffee Walks

Once you’ve settled into breakfast, let the rest of the morning unfold without a rush. Sleep in a little. Take your time getting ready. Have a second coffee.

Then head out for a walk. Lucky for you, NoMa is one of those neighborhoods that rewards wandering. Start with a loop through Alethia Tanner Park, and follow whatever catches your attention: vibrant murals, side streets, an outdoor movie screening of National Treasure.

At some point, you’ll realize it’s already the middle of the day. That’s when you can decide what comes next.

Midday: A Very D.C. Afternoon

The best thing about a D.C. staycation is that your options are pretty much endless. A few of our favorite ideas to treat Mom to:

  • Stay local: Find a sunny table nearby and linger over lunch. NoMa does this well. Easy, unfussy, and perfect for people-watching. (Some of our favorite spots to go are here.)
  • Get outside: Rent bikes and cruise a stretch of the Metropolitan Branch Trail. It runs right through the neighborhood and gives you a quieter, more lived-in view of the city.
  • Do the D.C. classic: Head down to the National Mall, starting near the Lincoln Memorial, then wander past the Washington Monument and make your way toward the Tidal Basin. In May, the journey feels a little less hectic and just right for a leisurely stroll with Mom.
  • Add a cultural stop: Spend an hour or two at the National Museum of American History, where In Pursuit of Life, Liberty & Happiness opens mid-May. It’s a very D.C. way to spend the afternoon, especially as America’s 250th nears.
  • Plan something memorable: Turn the afternoon into an evening out with tickets to a show. The National Theatre is hosting The Great Gatsby, while Shakespeare Theatre Company brings Othello to the stage.

Happy Hour: Toast to Mom

With the Sip Into Spring offer, you’ve got a built-in reason to head up to Sly Rooftop. Use the $50 beverage credit, savor something exotic, and revel in that extra time with Mom. After all, tomorrow is covered with a 2PM late checkout.

Evening: A Dinner Worth Dressing Up For

When it’s time for dinner, you don’t have to go far. At MARCUS DC, the tasting menu is a full evening in itself. The five-course experience, designed by DC's 2025 Rising Chef of the Year Anthony Jones and critically acclaimed Pastry Chef Rachel Sherriffe, is available Tuesday to Thursday for $110 a person.

Not visiting midweek? Your taste buds are always in good hands. Signature MARCUS DC dishes like mambo-sauced roast chicken, grilled whole bass, and dry-aged tomahawk steak are all worth lingering over.

After dinner, keep it simple. Maybe another drink upstairs at Sly. Maybe back to your room. Or maybe a self-care sleepover with in-room wellness amenities

Night: Sleep Well

This is the part that feels especially good for Mom: a quiet space, soft lighting, and nothing left on the schedule. Just time to relax. Encourage her to draw a bath, make a cup of tea, and settle into bed a little earlier than usual. With premium Italian linens and Le Labo bath products, even the smallest moments are relaxing.

It’s a gentle close to the day, and one she didn’t have to plan. Because the best Mother’s Day isn’t about doing everything. It’s about choosing a few moments that are thoughtful, intentional, and a little out of the ordinary.

Get started by booking your Mother’s Day staycation at The Morrow, and we’ll take care of the rest.
